PostHeaderIcon Our fireplace (natural gas) seems to only have blue flames, no orange. It looks horrible. Any suggestions?

We have had the gas company here and he says that the fireplace is just very efficeint and that is why it burns blue. I like the fact it pumps out lots of heat but it looks horrible and during the day you can’t even see the flames! Not very romantic or relaxing. Just wondering if there is a way to make it burn less efficient or create more orange flame. Thanks….

Leave the gas adjustment alone and simply reduce the air input by partially closing the air shutter located at the end of the burner. There may be a lock screw that needs loosening before you can move the shutter. Adjust it until you are satisfied with a soft yellow tipped flame. If it begins to soot or create an odor, re-adjust the other way slightly to prevent that. Always verify the fireplace damper is open when the decorative logs are on. FYI: home depot (among others) have artificial embers that you can place along the base of the fire to enhance the look, and painting the inside of the fireplace black also enhances the appearance of the flames.

PostHeaderIcon Natural Gas company budget program denial?

Ok I have my gas heat signed up in my mothers name.Because when I lived with my ex-boyfriend and his mom, around 5 years ago,she ran up a gas bill under my name.My mother doesn’t live with me,but she gave me the permission to put it in her name.It has been in her name for 2 years now.I recently tried to get on a program called "CAP".The objective of the program is to help keep heating costs at an amount that is payable on my income. And they denied be based on the fact that it is in her name and she is not a member of the household, eventhough I would otherwise be eligible. They told me that there is no way for me to get on the program as long as the account is under her name, even if she called personally. Is this legal? Im on a tight budget as a single parent, and the gas bill each month is outrageous.I live in the state of Pennsylvania.

Their gas their rules so put it in your name

PostHeaderIcon James Price Point and Broome Chamber of Commerce “What are the Facts on Gas?”

The proposed LNG processing hub at James Price Point, should it go ahead has the potential to significantly and fundamentally change our community forever, some change may be positive and some may be negative, the truth of this is that we just dont know. However given the potential impacts on our community we should all be actively engaged in the dialogue about our communities future in relation to this potential development. But what we need as a community to participate in that dialogue is facts and information. Information has been abundant but facts are as hard to find as the perfect natural pearl.
The president of the chamber has stated the council has opposed the Gas Hub as evidenced by their resolution of December 17 2009, that councilors were wrong to vote for the resolution because he was aware of many emails urging council not to support the resolution. And that the shire had neglected to take a leadership role on the proposed development. He didnt expand any further on the resolution of course. And I urge you all to read that resolution in full and make up your own mind about whether or not the council is taking a leadership role on this issue. Here is the link to those minutes for you to download from the shire website.

When you have downloaded it youll find the specific resolution on page 86.

PostHeaderIcon Natural Gas for Israel, from your pockets?

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2008/10/2008107155744340669.html

Do you think this is acceptable? Is it true this fact that 9 million in taxes from Egyptians goes to fund this project???? Why wouldn’t this 9 million go to Palestinian families???

it isnt acceptable .
the excuse that a private company signed the contract isnt accepteable .
i read there are negotiations between Egypt and Isreal .
as well as between Egypt and Italy .
it isnt a matter of increase in price Now .
the price was Bad when the treaties were signed , it is worse now .
the problem is that gas will expire after 15 yrs , HARAM !

PostHeaderIcon Why are alternative fuels better than using domestic oil and natural gases?

Please include facts that can be proven
this is for a debate im having so plz include facts and reason

Define "better" – alternatives for sure are a lot more expensive and will be for many years. Today, renewables supply less than 1% of the fuel needs of the US. If they continue to grow at the current rate, it will take about 3 to 5 years to double that.
Pollution is already on it’s way down and will continue to fall even with increased consumption. As the price of renewable technologies continues to come down it will move more and more into the mainstream and reduce conventional fuel’s proportion of the market.

The link below does a reasonable job of discussing the pros and cons of each.

PostHeaderIcon Is furnace size important or just burner size when your thinking about installing a natural gas system?

Original Question:
For instance; say I was using a furnace with a burner for heating a small house. Could i take that same furnace and couple it with a different burner (commercial grade) that could then power a business? (Aside from the fact that I would be uninstalling and reinstalling the same furnace in two different locations) Would it still run efficiently assuming it was hooked up and calibrated properly ?

——–Response 1:
It depends on the size of the business. If it is comparable to the residence in size, and insulation, and number of windows, etc, then yes is the answer.

Rereading, it seems you want to change the burner also. You need to consult a professional about that. It depends on the exact furnace model and brand and burner model and brand.
——–

I don’t really know anything about furnaces and I’m just learning about the burners. I figured you would be able to take a burner rated for (e.g. 40 MBtuh) and replace it with one rated for (e.g. 400 MBtuh)

I guess my real question is, is furnace size important or just burner size when your thinking about installing a natural gas system?
I’m not doing this for a specific building, my original post was misleading. Please disregard my previous idea of retrofitting

My original intended question was whether I’d be able to order the same furnace X with a burner (40M) for situation A as I would for with a burner (400M) for situation B. Or would I also need a furnace (400M).
In terms of the golfcart retrofitting, is my furnace type the rest of the car minus the engine (as you described would fail under such a load), or is it the operator of the golf cart (one size fits all)

Good analogy too.

I really don’t think you can take a 400 BTU/hr burner and replace one 1/10 the capacity. The rest of the heater system would be overloaded.

I noticed that you did not answer my question about the size of the buildings and their heating requirements.

Add to that the question of the rest of the heating system, is it hot water? hot air? steam? For all of these the system has to be sized for the new burner, that is just common sense. So the hot water system, pumps, diameter of pipes, etc, have to be sized for 10 times the amount of heat. For hot air, the ductwork has to be 10 times larger, etc.

In other words, the entire heating system has to be resized, not just the burner.

It’s like replacing the 50 HP engine in a golf cart with a 500 HP V8. I would burn out the transmission, the differential, the wheels, over load the suspension and the battery, etc.

re additional details, I think the above comments have answered the question.

PostHeaderIcon Natural gas composition?

There was a gas leak in the building at work today. The plumber, gas company, and other people said that the gas is denser than the air, so it sinks. I accept that fact, I know there are dangers of using propane heaters in a duck boat because the gas can settle in the bottom of the boat.

But when I was in 8th grade, we did a science experiment. We filled up drycleaning bags with the natural gas that comes from the spigots of each lab table (for the bunsen burners). Then we put in a SASE in each bag, taped them shut, and released them outside. All the bags floated off. They were made of transparent plastic. That implies the gas is lighter than air.

So why are there warning about the natural gas settling in a basement or other low areas? I natural gas composed of methane, ethane, propane, butane, etc but in diminishing percentages?

Usually the composition f natural gas is as follows:
Component Typical Analysis(mole %) Range(mole %)
Methane 94.9 87.0 – 96.0
Ethane 2.5 1.8 – 5.1
Propane 0.2 0.1 – 1.5
iso – Butane 0.03 0.01 – 0.3
normal – Butane 0.03 0.01 – 0.3
iso – Pentane 0.01 trace – 0.14
normal – Pentane 0.01 trace – 0.04
Hexanes plus 0.01 trace – 0.06
Nitrogen 1.6 1.3 – 5.6
Carbon Dioxide 0.7 0.1 – 1.0
Oxygen 0.02 0.01 – 0.1
Hydrogen trace trace – 0.02

Specific Gravity 0.585 0.57 – 0.62
GHV(MJ/m3), dry* 37.8 36.0 – 40.2
