PostHeaderIcon James Price Point and Broome Chamber of Commerce “What are the Facts on Gas?”

The proposed LNG processing hub at James Price Point, should it go ahead has the potential to significantly and fundamentally change our community forever, some change may be positive and some may be negative, the truth of this is that we just dont know. However given the potential impacts on our community we should all be actively engaged in the dialogue about our communities future in relation to this potential development. But what we need as a community to participate in that dialogue is facts and information. Information has been abundant but facts are as hard to find as the perfect natural pearl.
The president of the chamber has stated the council has opposed the Gas Hub as evidenced by their resolution of December 17 2009, that councilors were wrong to vote for the resolution because he was aware of many emails urging council not to support the resolution. And that the shire had neglected to take a leadership role on the proposed development. He didnt expand any further on the resolution of course. And I urge you all to read that resolution in full and make up your own mind about whether or not the council is taking a leadership role on this issue. Here is the link to those minutes for you to download from the shire website.

When you have downloaded it youll find the specific resolution on page 86.

    What Broome has is …
What Broome has is unique. Even when an issue divides the town as we have seen in recent times, it is not the issue itself, that has tweaked my interest, right or wrong is again not the concern, it is that fact that as polarised as the people may be, everyone is still “plugged” into BROOME and willing to fight for this town. Karatha for example with the Fly-in Fly-outs would not even have raised a conversation. It is because there is no heart, soul and commitment with Fly-in Fly-outs.

    The Comparative …
The Comparative Analysis of the Feasibility of Alternative Locations for the Development of a Liquefied Natural Gas Precinct Jan(2009) states that socially; an uncontrolled composition of a large industrial precinct will present major problems even if a town exists. There are no large urbanized areas capable of absorbing the workforce of such a development anywhere along the N W Coast and a significant itinerant workforce can place considerable pressures on local facilities and services.

    Honest & ethical …
Honest & ethical leadership, as well as the unbiased delivery of information to the community, is vital. The Shire’s decision to wait for concrete facts regarding the proposed development is sensible. The Broome Chamber of Commerce should follow suit, rather than supporting a development proposal it doesn’t yet have all the facts on. Does the Chamber’s support reflect the views of its members? Or does it take this stance because the Chamber president also works as a consultant to the gas sector?

    I think that there …
I think that there is enough evidence to declare the proposed gas plant a “stinker” on all levels.
It began with the obscene pressuring of the KLC by the Barnett Government – designed to scare them into compliance. It continues with lies from Barnett and his cronies about the environmental and cultural values of the site and the region it will affect. And we have to question the motives are of anyone who supports it: they clearly don’t care about tourism, the environment or the local lifestyle.

The way I see it, …
The way I see it, individuals who support something as grotesque as the proposed LNG processing plant on top of and adjacent to areas of what appear to be significant cultural importance and are certainly of vast environmental importance are putting their self interest before everything else. In other words, they’re downright bloody selfish and greedy and should be shunned by all fair thinking people.
