There was a correct answer given. It is because of the tank which has to withstand 200 bar pressure. Once a vessel is fabricated for such high pressure it has to go through certification process which cost money. Also there is an electronic switching device which has some sensor in it to do the switching when required. Then again the tuning of the engine to match both gas and Natural gas requires skilled labor. So all these cost adds to something like 3K. There are some places where they fir the cooking gas directly and this will cost less since we are not paying for the cooking gas cylinders.
When this is the truth please resist from listening to "knowledgeable" peoples theory of conspiracy by the oil companies. They are in business and so are the people who are marketing the natural gas. It is an open market and who gives more value to the customer wins.
References :
Red tape. The EPA has made the certification process for conversion kits very laborious and expensive. This is because natural gas and propane conversion kits in the 80's suffered from a one size fits all approach and resulted in duel fuel vehicles that would have worse emissions than the original vehicle when running on gasoline and the EPA wanted the gasoline operation to remain no worse than the original configuration. Even with the higher costs, it's still worth while for organizations to operate CNG vehicles especially vehicles designed originally to be CNG vehicles. The Post office uses CNG, some taxi companies and many cities operate CNG fleet vehicles.
References :
in my country, almost all taxis are converted because its much much cheaper than gasoline

its expensive because of the parts and the work needed to properly convert your car to LNG. The tank alone is expensive.
References :
The tank to store the natural gas must be engineered to withstand very high pressures. Those tanks have to be fully x-rayed and tested.

Next, your vehicles fuel system is set up for gasoline, so the whole fuel system must be modified.

Natural gas burns different and creates more pollutants, so the system must be tested and adjusted so as to minimize pollutants. The system must also pass federal and state tests.

Anyone saying they can convert your car for a few thousand bucks has not done all the testing and they or the car owner can be fined $10,000 or more.

Anyone that believes the oil companies are making it difficult, think about it, the natural gas comes from all those oil companies, they don't care, they make just as much profit (8% which is less profit than cellular phone companies make) selling gasoline or natural gas.
References :
Its not, the oil company's have a monoply right now which means lots of money for them and if the world switched to natural gas their would be no demand for fossil fuel gas and their would be a huge decrease in profits for them.. Basically owners of these companies are probably "donating" lots of money to politicians for their re-election campaigns making sure we dont switch...
References :
because there is no business for it. Nobody cares about the enviroment, there is very few gas places that you can fill up.

It's not that expensive for what you get. I did mine for about $1800.
